James A. Murphy
Mr. Murphy has more than 30 years of experience in corporate finance and middle-market investment banking. He has designed growth capital and shareholder liquidity solutions for numerous large and medium-sized family owned and closely held companies. In the transaction execution arena, he has spearheaded debt and equity fundraising activities and sourced and structured mergers and acquisitions as well as ESOPs, longer-term, minority position, private equity transactions and recapitalizations for both family owned and closely held businesses.
Mr. Murphy, who has spoken at various conferences on the financial solutions to the capital and liquidity needs of family-owned businesses, was a partner at investment banking firm de Visscher & Co. for 21 years. He is also a founder and general partner of the private equity firm Family Capital Growth Partners L.P., which invests long-term, minority investment capital in family businesses to foster growth and provide liquidity to shareholders. He was previously affiliated with Goldman Sachs & Co. and Ernst & Whinney’s privately owned business group, where he was a certified public accountant. He holds an MBA in Finance from New York University and a B.A. from Yale University. Mr. Murphy is a Registered Investment Banking Representative and holds both the Series 79 and Series 63 licenses.
Mr. Murphy has been a director of numerous privately held companies and not-for-profit organizations, including Blessing White, Inc., Velocity Print Solutions, Oneida Molded Plastics and Guida-Seibert Dairy. He is a past two-term board member and a fellow of the Family Firm Institute, the leading trade association of global family business advisers. He is also a former president and board member of the Yale Hockey Association. Mr. Murphy lives in Wilton, Conn., with his wife of 23 years, Donna, his two teenagers and two springer spaniels.
